The role of the national representatives to the IAI

This guide outlines the roles, responsibilities, and nomination processes for national representatives to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), detailing their function as links between the Institute and national-level stakeholders.

• The Conference of the Parties (CoP) serves as the primary policy-making body of the IAI, meeting at least annually to adopt policies, approve the Scientific Agenda, and manage the Institute's budget and financial records.
• National representatives act as the primary connection between the IAI and national government agencies, scientific institutions, and experts. Their mandate includes facilitating the nomination of experts to the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), promoting information exchange, and raising awareness of IAI outputs.
• Each Party must designate one Permanent Representative and one or more Alternate Permanent Representatives. These nominations must be submitted in writing by a competent diplomatic authority, such as an Embassy, Consulate, or Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the IAI Directorate.
• The Executive Council (EC) consists of nine Parties elected by the Conference of the Parties for two-year terms. The EC is responsible for developing policy recommendations for the CoP and ensuring the Directorate implements adopted policies.
