The role of ecosystem services in adaptation to global change for human wellbeing (SGP-HW)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is offering grants of up to US$ 200,000 for two-year transdisciplinary research projects in the Americas. The SGP-HW program focuses on the role of ecosystem services in adaptation to global change for human wellbeing, requiring collaboration between three or more IAI Parties and the integration of natural and social sciences. • The SGP-HW provides funding of up to US$ 200,000 for international collaborative research networks with a project duration of two years. These funds support research, data management, travel, workshops, capacity building, communication, dissemination, and scholarships, with a limit of 10% of the total budget for equipment and software and a 7% cap on accountable administrative expenses.
• The program requires a transdisciplinary approach that links science and policy to achieve social-ecological sustainability and human welfare. Research must be framed using an "integral human-nature approach" and developed jointly with stakeholders to address challenges faced by decision-makers regarding global change.
• Eligible research networks must include scientists and stakeholders from three or more IAI Parties. The IAI encourages the inclusion of early to mid-career scholars in key responsibilities and expects active roles for scientists from social, economic, legal, and other human-focused disciplines.
• Co-funding is a mandatory requirement and a key factor in the selection process, intended to ensure projects are not fully dependent on the IAI grant. The IAI expects higher levels of co-funding from upper and upper middle-income countries. Co-funding can be financial or in-kind, including researchers' salaries, scholarships, and access to facilities.
• Proposals must align with several global and regional frameworks, including the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, the 2020 and post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 (including Aichi Targets).
• The application process consists of two phases: an initial pre-proposal submission followed by a proposal writing workshop for up to 10 selected teams. Final selection is based on independent peer review and panel assessment of the team's interdisciplinarity and the proposal's merit and feasibility.
