INFORME DE LA REUNIÓN DE INVESTIGADORES DEL PROGRAMA DE REDES DE INVESTIGACIÓN COOPERATIVA (CRN3)

This report documents a meeting of researchers from the Cooperative Research Networks program (CRN3), held in Cancún, Mexico, from November 29 to December 1, 2017. Organized by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) in collaboration with Mexico and CRN3 Principal Investigators, the meeting focused on scientific contributions, science-policy interfaces, open data, and the communication of research results to diverse stakeholders.

• The meeting addressed the need for the IAI to improve the translation of scientific excellence into actionable results for government use.
• Representatives from the IPCC and IPBES highlighted challenges in translating scientific results for policymakers and suggested cooperation areas for the IAI, such as aligning scientific projects with national environmental frameworks and contributing results to IPCC and IPBES processes.
• Discussions on the science-policy interface identified that interdisciplinary contributions facilitate integration with social sciences and that networking is essential for user-oriented, transdisciplinary international research. The effectiveness of these networks is enhanced by a diverse range of scientists, including postgraduate students and senior researchers acting as mentors.
• The IAI is working to diversify funding for the sustainability of its Scientific Program, including discussions with funding agencies to create an Americas-based forum similar to the Belmont Forum. To support this, the IAI will host the Belmont Forum Secretariat in Montevideo.
• The Government of Uruguay offered the IAI access to its open data catalog via the Agency for Electronic Government and Information and Knowledge Society (AGESIC), enabling the IAI to manage an open data system for CRN3 and other projects.
• Project groups proposed several collaborative outputs, including a special issue on water with 10 to 15 papers (via CRN3038 SAFER), a policy document on local and international governance of artisanal fisheries and marine protected areas (via marine projects CRN3095 Antares and CRN3070 VOCES), and a position paper on transdisciplinary science regarding environment and health interactions.
• The IAI Science Director presented a plan for a competitive process to compile position papers based on CRN3 projects for a special issue in a peer-reviewed policy/development journal, with publication expected 12 to 18 months after the meeting.
