Policy statements

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research outlines policies for the sharing, preservation, and accessibility of global change data. • The Institute identifies the full and open sharing of global change data sets between its Parties as a fundamental objective, asserting that all Parties should have free access to data, information, and results from IAI-funded programs for scientific purposes.
• To prevent the loss of important data sets, the Institute requires the preservation of data needed for global change research and proposes a clearinghouse process, with an Action Plan maintained by the Director and the Scientific Advisory Committee.
• Data exchange should be conducted using international standards for media and processing, and provided to researchers at the lowest possible cost, which should not exceed the marginal cost of fulfilling the request.
