Beneficios y oportunidades IAI

This fact sheet outlines the benefits, opportunities, and current engagements of Peru as a member country of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), focusing on scientific diplomacy, research funding, and institutional representation.

• Peru has national representatives serving on several IAI committees, including Guipsy Katherine Alata Ramos on the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee, and Juan Julio Ordoñez Gálvez and Dora Evelith Marín Sánchez on the Oceans, Islands and Coastal Zones Committee.
• The IAI has funded a project titled "Multidimensional vulnerability to dengue and diarrhea" with a budget of US$ 15,000. This project involves a diverse team including the Agencia Andina de Salud Hipólito Unanue (Peru), Bridge to Health (United States), the EcoHealth and Urban Ecology Laboratory and the Latin American Center of Excellence in Climate Change and Health at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, the Federación de Comunidades Nativas de la Cuenca del Corrientes, and Orbital Latinoamérica (Costa Rica).
• Peru is involved in the Harmonize Project, which focuses on creating digital toolkits to standardize data regarding environment, climate, and health, an initiative led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
• The IAI provides various professional development and capacity-building opportunities, such as the Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program for early and mid-career public officials, and training in scientific diplomacy for decision-makers in the Americas, which took place in Panama from October 16-21, 2023.
• Upcoming opportunities for members include a workshop on scientific diplomacy for drought resilience in Latin America scheduled for May 26-28, 2025, in Paraguay, as well as annual nominations for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), the Science and Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), and the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC).
