Approved – CoP-11 B. Aires IAI Director Recruitment

This briefing document outlines a proposed timeline and procedural framework for the recruitment and election of a new Director for the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), as recommended by the Executive Council on 30 June 2004.

• The Executive Council recommended a recruitment timeline that targets the election of a new IAI Director during a Conference of the Parties (CoP) meeting in mid-February 2005, potentially extending to early March. Under this schedule, the new Director is expected to begin their duties in June 2005.
• To accommodate the February 2005 CoP date, the IAI proposed that the CoP delegate the authority to approve CRN II awards to the Executive Council, as the Call for Proposals is not expected until January 2005, making it impossible for the CoP to review them in February.
• The recruitment process involves a Search Committee tasked with defining the position description, creating the vacancy announcement, and identifying venues for the announcement between July 1 and September 1, 2004. The vacancy announcement was scheduled to be posted on September 1, 2004, with an application deadline in mid-November 2004.
• The election process is governed by specific rules: the CoP meeting for the election must be called with at least 90 days' advance notice, and candidates must be nominated 45 days prior to the election date.
• In the event of a vacancy before a term is completed, the Executive Council designates an individual to serve as Interim Director for a maximum period of six months.
