DECLARATION OF MONTEVIDEO

The Declaration of Montevideo, signed between 12-14 May 1992, establishes the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) as a regional network to coordinate scientific and economic research on global change in the Americas.

• The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) was established via an agreement signed in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 12-14 May 1992. The Institute is designed as a regional network of research entities intended to coordinate scientific and economic research regarding the causes, consequences, and extent of global change in the Americas, acting as an interface between science and policy.
• The implementation of the Institute's research programs and the development of its specialized facilities are to be driven by scientific interests. To facilitate the transition to operational status, an Implementation Committee composed of representatives from signatory States was created to lay the groundwork until the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
