DECLARATION OF MONTEVIDEO

The Declaration of Montevideo, signed May 12-14, 1992, establishes the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) as a regional network of research entities. The Institute aims to coordinate scientific and economic research on the causes and consequences of global change in the Americas to inform the policy process. To ensure operational readiness, the signatories agreed to create an Implementation Committee and to notify the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED-92) of the Institute's creation.

• The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is established as a regional network intended to coordinate scientific and economic research regarding the extent, causes, and consequences of global change in the Americas, acting as an interface between science and policy.
• The implementation of the Institute's research programs and the development of its specialized facilities are to be driven by scientific interests.
• An Implementation Committee consisting of representatives from signatory States was created to prepare the Institute for operation prior to the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
