Headquarters of the Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research

This briefing document outlines the process for relocating the headquarters of the Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) following the Uruguayan Government's decision to terminate its Host Country Agreement.

• The Government of Uruguay notified the IAI Directorate on 31 January 2024 of its decision to denounce the Host Country Agreement, citing financial constraints. This agreement is scheduled to terminate on 31 July 2024, six months after the notification date.
• Panama was the sole country to submit an expression of interest to host the IAI Directorate headquarters. After requesting and receiving an extension, Panama submitted its formal proposal to host the headquarters on 8 March 2024.
• The Conference of the Parties is requested to vote on and approve Panama's proposal to host the IAI Directorate headquarters during an extraordinary meeting scheduled for 26 March 2024.
