The IAI Executive Directorate is relocating its headquarters to Panama following a decision by the Conference of the Parties on March 26, 2024. The transition involves drafting a Headquarters Agreement to be approved by the National Assembly of Panama, with the process expected to align with the new government taking office on July 1, 2024. To ensure operational continuity, the IAI has requested that its current diplomatic privileges and bank accounts in Uruguay be extended until July 31, 2025.

• The IAI Conference of the Parties adopted Decision 2024/Extra-CoP/1 on March 26, 2024, approving Panama's proposal to host the IAI Executive Directorate headquarters.
• The relocation to Panama requires a Headquarters Agreement between the IAI and the Republic of Panama, which must be approved by law by the National Assembly of Panama.
• Due to general elections in Panama on May 5, 2024, the agreement with the host country is expected to be presented to the National Assembly after the elected government takes office on July 1, 2024.
• The IAI has formally requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay to extend bank accounts and diplomatic privileges and immunities for staff and families until July 31, 2025, to maintain operations during the move.
• The move to Panama is intended to increase regional connectivity and strengthen engagement with the Caribbean and Central America.
