Summary report of activities from 1 July 2023 to date by the IAI Directorate

This report details the activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate from 1 July 2023 to 13 October 2023. It focuses on the implementation of decisions from the 31st meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-31), specifically regarding research programs on climate-health and ocean systems, science diplomacy, and the expansion of institutional associations.

• The IAI Directorate has launched several initiatives to address the nexus of climate, environment, and health, including a virtual campus course on "Transdisciplinary Research at the nexus of Climate, Environment, and Health" and a 3-week certificate course on "El Niño and the reduction of its impacts on the health sector" in collaboration with PAHO, WMO, and GCCHE. Additionally, 12 research teams from 15 countries are set to receive seed grants for projects in this field.
• To address the nexus of oceans, islands, and coastal systems, the IAI established a Committee on Oceans, Islands and Coastal Regions, which received 15 nominations from the SAC, Parties, staff, STeP fellows, and associates. The committee meets monthly and is exploring support for a Belmont CRA on Oceans.
• The IAI is expanding its institutional network by inviting the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Centro de Investigación para el Cambio Global (CICAG) of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA) in Paraguay to become Associates of the Institute. A final version of the MoU with CICAG was reached on 12 September 2023.
• The Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) launched a Training Program for Policy Makers in the Americas, with an inaugural workshop in Panama from 19-21 October 2023, and is planning a subsequent workshop with MCTI Brazil for 2024. The IAI also continues the Science, Technology and Policy Fellowship (STeP) with 45 fellows from 14 countries.
• The IAI is promoting gender equity and inclusion through the "Women as Biodiversity and Climate-Resilience Guardians in Peatland Landscapes of the Andes (Women as Guardians)" proposal, which targets the empowerment of women, including those of Indigenous heritage, in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Furthermore, the IAI provided scholarships to 53 early career researchers for SRI 2023 and 32 students for the 15th Biennial Meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
• The IAI is developing a call for research grants on Amazonia and Tropical Forests in collaboration with FAPESP and the Belmont Forum, with an expected launch in June 2024. Scoping workshops were held in Panama and Leticia, Colombia.
• The IAI has established a committee on Open Science and Open Data to implement a Collaborative South-South regional approach, following instructions from COP27 to strengthen collaborations with CODATA, the International Council for Science (ICS), and the African Academy of Science (AAS).
