Recruitment for the post of Executive Director

This briefing document outlines the proposed recruitment process and timeline for the next Executive Director of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), as the current director's second term ends on 31 May 2023.

• The recruitment process for the Executive Director is governed by Article VIII of the Agreement, which mandates that the Director be elected by a two-thirds majority of the Conference of the Parties for a three-year term, with eligibility for only one additional term. Furthermore, the Director cannot be a citizen or permanent resident of the country that hosts the Directorate.
• A proposed timeline for the recruitment process includes the establishment of a selection committee at the 30th meeting of the IAI Conference of the Parties (CoP-30, 2022), the public dissemination of the post description on 1 October 2022, and the evaluation of applications and interviews in January 2023. A recommendation is to be submitted to Parties on 15 February 2023, followed by an extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties on 1 March 2023 to agree on a candidate, who should assume the post on 1 June 2023.
• The IAI Directorate identifies a need for greater diversity in the leadership role, noting that all previous Executive Directors have been male and that no directors have been selected from the Caribbean, Central America, or the Andean region.
• To increase the regional balance and the size of the candidate pool, the IAI Directorate suggests that the Executive Council submit nominations to the Conference of the Parties for consideration, while still encouraging Parties to submit their own preferred nominations to the Executive Council.
