Summary report of activities by the IAI Directorate mid-term of the 2021-2022 intersessional period
Summary
The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate's mid-term report for the 2021-2022 intersessional period details progress in science, capacity building, and communication. Key achievements include the expansion of the Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellowship program, the launch of the IAI Transdisciplinary (TD) Academy, and the securing of approximately 1.3 million Euros for a drought information project in the La Plata basin. The Directorate also reports contributions to the IPCC 6th Assessment Report and the development of climate-health tools in the Caribbean.
Key insights
- The IAI is expanding its Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellowship program by over 50% for the 2021-2022 period, adding 24 new fellows and three new countries. The first-year cohort consisted of 17 fellows from Argentina, Mexico, Canada, and the USA.
- The IAI Directorate secured approximately 1.3 million Euros in funding from Euroclima and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for the SISSA (Drought Information System for Southern South America) project. This project, running from 2021-2024, is led by Argentina’s National Meteorological Service to provide drought information for La Plata basin countries.
- The IAI has launched the Transdisciplinary (TD) Academy to provide training on transdisciplinary research and skills, holding its first webinar on 10 September 2021. Additionally, it launched the International mobility research Fellowship Program for Latin American and Caribbean early career scientists on past global changes sciences in June 2021, receiving 16 applicants from six countries.
- In the Caribbean, the IAI is executing two transdisciplinary projects on vector-borne diseases and gender dynamics, and climate variability, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank via the University of West Indies (2020-2021). While these were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a new EU-funded consultancy with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) will continue the development of climate tools for the health sector.
- The IAI contributed regional expertise on the effects of climate on health to the IPCC 6th Assessment Report (WGII Chapter 12 on Central and South America) and the WCRP's report on Science Underpinning Sustainable Development in the Andes.
- To improve science communication and public awareness, the IAI re-launched its newsletter in July 2021, created a dedicated Twitter account for the STeP program (@STeP_IAI), and produced six bilingual briefs on Small Grant Program projects.
- The IAI is developing a Regional Assessment to understand decisions impacted by or impacting global environmental change, initiating this process with a listening session in August 2021 involving Argentina, Mexico, Panama, and Colombia.
