Report of the IAI Executive Council

This briefing report from the Chair of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Executive Council (EC) outlines activities and recommendations for the 49th meeting on 19 August 2020. It focuses on the transition of EC membership, the development of a flexible funding mechanism for the Americas, the revision of the IAI Scientific agenda, and pending financial reports and budget approvals for the Conference of the Parties (CoP-28).

• The two-year terms for the nine members of the Executive Council, including the Chair, were set to expire in August 2020, prompting a call for new nominations with a focus on balanced gender and geographic representation.
• Efforts to organize a meeting of donors, national funding agencies, and development banks in Latin America and the Caribbean to design a flexible funding mechanism for the Americas—originally planned for October 2020 in Montevideo, Uruguay—were cancelled due to Covid-19. The IAI Directorate intends to plan a similar meeting during the 2020-2021 intersessional period, depending on external financial resources.
• The Executive Council recommends that the Conference of the Parties (CoP-28) adopt the revised IAI Scientific Agenda, which was developed based on work by the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC).
• The Chair of the Executive Council had not received the IAI Auditors Report or the IAI Financial Status Report at the time of writing because the IAI Directorate was missing required documentation from Principal Investigators of SGP and CRN3 projects. Consequently, final approval of these reports, as well as the Core Budget and Country Contributions for FY 2020-2021 and the Preliminary request 2021-2023, remained contingent on review by the Finance Advisory Committee.
