Report of the IAI Executive Council

This report, prepared by the United States of America as Chair of the Executive Council (EC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), outlines the activities of the EC during the intersessional period leading up to its 45th meeting in June 2018. It details the EC's oversight of various decisions from the 25th Conference of the Parties (CoP-25), including efforts to improve data transparency, document accessibility, communication strategies, and long-term funding sustainability.

• The Executive Council (EC) supported the development of an IAI open data policy and principles by utilizing guidelines from the United States National Science Foundation. Additionally, the Government of Uruguay provided a contribution to enable the creation of an IAI open data catalog.
• The IAI Directorate improved the accessibility of official documents by making CoP documents from CoP-1 to CoP-4 available on the website, re-numbering CoP and EC Decisions, and consolidating all CoP Decisions into a single document.
• The EC identified a need for a Long-term communication strategy and plan to increase awareness of the IAI among stakeholders and policy makers. This strategy is intended to inform other initiatives, such as an outreach brochure, the 25th Anniversary publication, and efforts to augment science communication capacities for research projects.
• To ensure sustainable long-term funding, the EC supported a draft funding strategy, the potential establishment of an IAI endowment, and efforts to make the IAI a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code.
