Aprobación de los Informes de las 43a y 44a reuniones del Consejo Ejecutivo del IAI

This briefing document, prepared by the Executive Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), presents the draft reports and minutes from the 43rd and 44th meetings of the IAI Executive Council (EC), both held in Bogotá, Colombia, in June 2017. The document seeks the formal approval of these reports during the 45th meeting of the Executive Council in Antigua, Guatemala, on June 19, 2018.

• The IAI Executive Council (EC) established two commissions to recommend candidates for upcoming elections to be decided by the 25th Conference of the Parties (CoP-25). The commission for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) consists of Brazil, the United States, and Paraguay, while the commission for the Science and Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) includes Chile, Colombia, and the United States.
• The IAI is shifting its strategic focus toward the science-policy interface, aiming to translate scientific research into better guidance for policy decisions. This includes the creation of the Science and Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) to strengthen informed decision-making within member countries.
• The Executive Council recommended several institutional improvements to increase transparency and engagement, including the implementation of an open data policy, the creation of member country information sheets detailing benefits and contributions, and making official EC, CoP, SAC, and SPAC documents available on the IAI portal without passwords.
• The IAI is pursuing a 'tripartite governance' structure with offices in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. As of June 2017, the Montevideo office was fully operational, while agreements for the host country offices in Argentina and Brazil were still under negotiation.
• The IAI's financial status showed a strengthened position by April 30, 2017, having collected 102% of approved contributions for the 2016/2017 fiscal year. Reserves were sufficient to cover 7.5 months of operation, increasing to 11 months if including committed funds from the United States.
• The proposed Operating Budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year was set at US$ 1,420,000, with the Executive Council deciding to maintain the current level of member country contributions without increases.
• The IAI is actively seeking alternative funding sources and regional partnerships to ensure sustainability, including promoting participation in the 'Belmont Forum Americas Information Days' in São Paulo, Brazil, and exploring the creation of an Inter-American Forum of Funding Agencies.
• The IAI's scientific program includes 17 projects under the Collaborative Research Network Program (CRN3) and 7 CONICET-IAI projects in Argentina. A new Small Grant Program (SGP) call was announced focusing on the role of ecosystem services in global change adaptation.
