Approval of the Reports of the 43rd and 44th meetings of the IAI Executive Council

This briefing document, prepared by the IAI Directorate for the 45th meeting of the Executive Council in Antigua, Guatemala, requests the approval of the minutes from the 43rd and 44th meetings of the IAI Executive Council, both held in Bogotá, Colombia, in June 2017.

• The 43rd meeting of the IAI Executive Council included a Science-Policy Workshop focused on aligning IAI research and capacity building with regional priorities. Key recommendations included the development of an open data policy, the creation of individual Member Country datasheets to demonstrate membership benefits, and the need for a long-term communication and funding strategy.
• The IAI Executive Council established two committees to recommend candidates for upcoming elections to be held at CoP-25: one for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), composed of Brazil, Paraguay, and the United States, and one for the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), composed of Chile, Colombia, and the United States.
• For the 2016/2017 fiscal year, the IAI collected 102% of approved contributions as of 30 April 2017. The IAI's cash balance at the end of April 2017 was 179.8% higher than the balance in March 2016, with reserves sufficient to cover 7.5 months of operations, or 11 months if US committed funds are included.
• The IAI Core Budget request for the 2017-2018 fiscal year was set at US$1,420,000, which is a slight increase of US$3,884 over the 2016-2017 budget. The Executive Council accepted this request and proposed maintaining country contribution levels without changes.
• The IAI is implementing a tripartite governance structure with offices in Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. While the Montevideo office is fully operational, the agreement for the Argentina office is still under negotiation, and the IAI is exploring opportunities for the Science Development Directorate in Brazil.
• The 44th meeting of the Executive Council focused on reviewing decisions from the 43rd meeting and CoP-25. This included directing the SAC and SPAC to provide evaluation criteria for candidate selection and encouraging member country funding agencies to participate in the Belmont Forum Americas Information Days in São Paulo, Brazil, on 6 November 2017.
