Minutes from the 37th Executive Council (EC) meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on August 12, 2014, in Mexico City. • The proposed operating budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year is US$1,370,028, representing a 6% increase over the previous year. To fund this, the IAI proposed an 8.9% increase in member country contributions, raising the total target to US$1,400,000.
• The IAI is implementing a tripartite administrative structure. The office for Integrated Operations and Finance in Montevideo, Uruguay, is fully operational after a move costing US$175,000. The Science-Policy Liaison office in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is also operational, though the hiring of its Director was delayed due to diploma legalization issues. The Scientific Development office in São José dos Campos, Brazil, faces delays regarding the Host Country Agreement and staff profiles.
• The IAI has been selected as the regional liaison for the Americas for the 'Future Earth' initiative, a merger of international global change organizations including IGBP, IHDP, and Diversitas.
• The EC urged member countries to expand the representation of interest groups beyond official representative institutions, citing the creation of a National Committee for the IAI in Uruguay—which includes academia and various government sectors—as a model.
• The IAI is exploring a funding model based on the Belmont Forum to encourage national funding agencies to collaborate on multilateral international research projects, specifically targeting the Andes region (Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia) and the Plata Basin (São Paulo, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay).
