The minutes of the 36th Meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Executive Council, held on June 14, 2013, in Montevideo, Uruguay, detail discussions on establishing a science-policy advisory committee, strategies to increase member country engagement and funding, and administrative policies regarding personnel contracting.

• The IAI Executive Director noted that training events are the most effective method for engaging member countries, particularly when they include a mix of students, practitioners, politicians, and scientists. However, these activities are currently limited by their exclusive funding through a grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF).
• The EC decided that the IAI should avoid entering into employer-employee administrative obligations in any country other than Uruguay to maintain the broad tax exemptions provided by its host country agreement. Consequently, personnel in other countries should only be contracted as part-time consultants responsible for their own social security, taxation, and insurance.
• The EC agreed to evaluate whether the IAI Strategic Plan needs modification to better reflect new initiatives and the evolving global environmental research landscape, specifically noting that current innovation factors, such as new funding modalities like Future Earth, are not captured in the existing document.
