Minutas de la Trigésima Segunda Reunión del Consejo Ejecutivo (CE) del IAI

Minutes from the 32nd Executive Council (EC) meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on June 16-17, 2011, in Asunción, Paraguay. The meeting focused on the process for selecting a new host country for the IAI Executive Directorate, establishing a cooperation agreement with ECLAC (CEPAL), and discussing the CRN 3 program and strategic planning.

• The Executive Council established a process to select a new host country for the IAI Executive Directorate, including the creation of an ad hoc commission composed of Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, and the USA. The commission is tasked with assisting bidding parties and evaluating proposals, with a deadline for proposal submission on November 15 and a final report due by January 15, 2012.
• The IAI signed a framework agreement with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC/CEPAL) to cooperate on urban affairs and climate change. This follows previous joint work on training programs regarding urban responses to climate change.
• The IAI is preparing the CRN 3 program, currently under evaluation by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Executive Director noted a historical failure in integrating social sciences into previous programs (CRN 2), where social scientists were often added only symbolically, and sought guidelines to ensure true integration of human dimensions in future calls.
• The Executive Council approved the statutes for the Finance and Administration Committee (FAC), which currently includes representatives from Brazil, Canada, the USA, and the Director of Finance and Administration as an ex officio member.
• To improve institutional visibility, the Executive Council recommended that the IAI participate in the UNFCCC COP through a side event, with Colombia offering assistance to identify the necessary contacts within the UNFCCC.
• A working group was created to draft an implementation plan for the IAI Strategic Plan, consisting of representatives from the USA, Canada, Dominican Republic, the EC President, and the IAI Executive Director.
• The Council discussed strategies to revitalize relationships with Mexico and Venezuela; Argentina offered to contact Venezuela via its Ministry of Science, and the USA agreed to contact Mexico through diplomatic channels.
