Minutas de la Vigésima Quinta Reunión del Consejo Ejecutivo (CE) del IAI

The minutes of the 25th Executive Council (EC) meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on November 28-29, 2007, in Arlington, VA, USA. • The AAAS evaluation recommended that the IAI improve its Data and Information System (DIS), promote projects studying the interaction between human activities and environmental change, and establish a reserve fund to ensure financial stability.
• The Executive Council initiated the development of a long-term Strategic Plan, establishing a commission to draft Terms of Reference (TORs) by December 20, 2007. The plan aims to balance integrated research, research networks, and informed action, while potentially expanding the scientific agenda to include engineering and medical sciences.
• The IAI is facing challenges with member country contributions, specifically noting that Guatemala has never contributed and Uruguay has only made an initial contribution. Conversely, Peru and Chile have shown positive responses by paying overdue obligations.
• The IAI is diversifying its funding by seeking external grants, including a grant from the MacArthur Foundation for research on climate change effects on Andean biodiversity and a proposal to the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada for CAD 440,000 regarding the La Plata Basin.
• The IAI is implementing several training institutes between 2007 and 2009, including programs on information management in Panama (February 2008), climate change risk in Honduras (May 2008), semi-arid basin management in Brazil (October 2008), and urban responses to climate change in Chile (March/April 2009).
• The Financial and Administrative Committee (FAC) recommended returning to a triennial budget proposal starting with the 2008/09 fiscal year to provide the Executive Council and Conference of the Parties (CoP) with better long-term visibility of IAI plans.
