Report of the 24th SAC Meeting

• The IAI Directorate and the SAC identified a need to increase the societal relevance of IAI science and GEC research to maintain the institution and secure new funding. This includes integrating human dimensions research through supplemental funds of US$800K (SGP-HD) and aligning research with country priorities such as "Hydro, Health Forestry, Biodiversity, Urban".
• The SAC is entering a transition period where it will shift its focus from reviewing science proposals toward strategic planning. The short-term agenda for 2007 and 2008 includes supporting the move from individual projects to research programs, balancing the science portfolio to include climate uncertainties and adaptation to GEC, and facilitating the synthesis of CRN research activities at the mid-point of CRN II.
• The SAC defined its role in enhancing CRN II activities by identifying synergies across networks, fostering interdisciplinary research between natural and social sciences, and tracking emerging scientific issues. It emphasized that while the SAC identifies opportunities, the final decisions to act on them remain with the Principal Investigators (PIs).
• The SAC endorsed the need for an overarching strategic plan that embeds GEC science within broader issues like poverty alleviation, economic development, and equity. The plan should also consider the IAI's role as a broker between macro and micro spatial scales and improve the outreach and application of scientific products within the region.
• The SAC is undergoing a renewal process to ensure members contribute to the institutional wellbeing of the IAI beyond their specific scientific disciplines. New members will be sought with expertise in Meteorology & climatology, Biodiversity & ecosystems services, Urban & energy, and Environment & economy. Four members (VB, RC, WF, and LL) are departing in mid-2007, with elections for their replacements scheduled for June 2007 in Manaus, Brazil.
