Minutes of the Twenty-First Meeting of the IAI Executive Council (EC)

He noted that while scientific excellence had been achieved, the IAI had not yet effectively tackled the task of defining policy relevance in regional and national contexts.
• The IAI sought to increase its international visibility and influence by applying for observer status with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to ensure representation at annual Conferences of the Parties (CoP), including COP 11 in Canada.
• Financial concerns were raised regarding member country contributions for 2004/2005. A report indicated that 79% of the Core Budget is funded by the three largest contributors, 15% by the next four largest, and the remaining 12 countries (paying US$ 5,000 per year) account for only 6% of the budget.
• The IAI organized training institutes in 2005 to address specific regional issues: one on 'Vulnerability Associated with Climate Variability and Climate Change in the Americas' in Asuncion, Paraguay (October 17-28, 2005), and another on 'Climate and Health in the Americas' in Kingston, Jamaica (November 7-18, 2005).
