This June 1998 report from the Chief Scientific Officer of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) synthesizes the progress of two primary scientific programs: the Initial Scientific Program (ISP) and the Cooperative Research Networks (CRN).

• The Initial Scientific Program (ISP) has stimulated cooperative research on global change across the Americas. Projects in rounds I and II received funding ranging from $30,000 to $120,000. Productivity indicators include the presentation of research results at over 30 scientific meetings and the publication or preparation of 37 works (19 published or in press, 9 submitted, and 9 in preparation).
• The IAI has focused on institutional strengthening through student training, providing support to more than 30 students at various levels (from undergraduate to post-doctoral) to conduct global change research in several locations across the Americas.
• The Cooperative Research Networks (CRN) program aims to develop global change research consortia, offering groups of scientists across the Americas up to $200,000 per year. The CRN follows the IAI Start-Up Program, which previously awarded 37 grants of approximately $50,000 each to help teams develop proposals for the CRN.
• Out of 70 total pre-proposals received for the CRN by the March 23, 1998 deadline, a committee selected 33 for full proposal submission. This group included 23 pre-proposals from Start-Up groups and 10 recommended 'new initiatives'. The committee encouraged the merging of similar projects to avoid funding multiple initiatives in the same area.
