This report documents the proceedings of the ninth meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held from April 14-16, 1998, in Santiago, Chile. The meeting focused on revising the IAI Science Agenda, reviewing current scientific programs and workshops, and planning future collaborations with international bodies such as the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP).

• The SAC approved a reorganized IAI Science Agenda that consolidated seven original themes into four new frameworks: (I) Understanding Climate Variability in the Americas, (II) Comparative Studies of Ecosystems, Biodiversity, Land Use and Water Resources in the Americas, (III) Changes in the Composition of the Atmosphere, Oceans and Fresh Waters, and (IV) Integrated Assessment, Human Dimensions and Applications.
• The IAI and the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP) identified several areas for closer collaboration, including joint activities between research networks, a joint proposal to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for global change impact centers (with one proposed for Buenos Aires), and collaboration on ENSO and climate variability as they relate to agriculture.
• The IAI implemented the Initial Science Program (ISP) Round II, approving 16 projects. To fund all approved projects within available resources, the IAI Directorate negotiated an average budget reduction of 10% per project.
• The IAI conducted three regional ENSO workshops between October 1997 and January 1998 in Lima, Peru; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Fortaleza, Brazil. These workshops aimed to formulate consensus regional precipitation forecasts and develop pilot applications for sectors such as health, agriculture, and fisheries.
