This report details the progress of Project RLA/92/G34, an initiative by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) supported by UNDP, GEF, and WMO to investigate global change in member countries. • Jamaica has been incorporated into the project through the University of The West Indies-Department of Physics, following approval at the Second Tripartite Meeting and a financial donation from the NSF.
• The IAI is establishing 'Research Consortia' at the highest scientific level in member countries, a process expected to develop during 1998 and continue for three years to support research on biodiversity, climate change, and global change.
• A proposed CO2 observational network in the Amazon Basin, involving Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, aims to determine carbon fluxes over a 3-year period with a budget of US$5,230,000. The network proposes a minimum of 15 monitoring stations using eddy covariance sensors on micrometeorological towers to compare carbon exchange across old-growth forest, secondary forest, pasture/agriculture, and selectively logged forest.
• Research in the Amazon indicates that undisturbed forest systems may act as a net carbon sink, with a significant carbon accumulation rate of 5.8 t ha-1 yr-1 observed in Rondônia and Manaus. However, model calculations suggest that small increases in temperature could change the forest from a net sink to a net source due to increased soil respiration.
