IAI PROGRAM PLAN

The IAI Program Plan for 1998-1999 establishes goals to advance scientific programs, build regional capacity, and enhance the participation of scientists and countries in the Americas. The plan includes a budget of funded activities, such as graduate and postdoctoral training in Brazil and Mexico, and the development of climate forecasts. Future initiatives include CO2 monitoring in the Amazon Basin and the Pan-American Climate Information System (PACIS) for disaster preparedness.

• The IAI has established several strategic goals for its 1998-1999 program, including advancing the Scientific Program, increasing regional capacity building, improving the dissemination of activities to policy and decision-making levels, and strengthening cooperation with international organizations regarding global environmental change.
• The institute is implementing a training and education program with specific funding for graduate and postdoctoral studies in Brazil (1,200,000 from CNPq/MCT/INPE for 1999-2003) and Mexico (300,000 from UNAM-CICESE for 1999-2001), as well as an IAI Summer School at the University of Miami.
• The IAI is planning a proposal for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to monitor CO2 in the Amazon Basin, which has received support from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru.
• The United States and Chile expressed an intent on April 16-17, 1998, to launch the Pan-American Climate Information System (PACIS) for disaster preparedness, seeking support from the IAI, the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI-CP), the Inter-American Development Bank, and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
• A work plan for the Caribbean region has been submitted to the IAI and NSF, proposing a survey of global change research, courses on Environmental Engineering at the University of West Indies, and training in Coastal Resources Management and GIS software.
