Centro de Diplomacia Científica

This briefing document presents recommendations from the Advisory Board of the IAI's Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) to be discussed at the 33rd meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) in Asunción, Paraguay. It outlines strategic goals across four pillars: capacity building, the STeP fellowship program, emerging themes, and a knowledge center, while emphasizing the need for inclusive, multi-sectoral partnerships to advance science diplomacy in the Americas.

• The Advisory Board recommends expanding in-person science diplomacy workshops and promoting the 'Science Diplomacy and Innovation Curriculum' across various sectors in the Americas. To increase practical value, the board suggests adding guided discussion topics, professional interviews, and local adaptation templates, while integrating the curriculum with the SDC's knowledge center.
• The SDC has established a working group on emerging issues and technologies, with artificial intelligence designated as the annual theme for 2025-2026. This group will include regional experts to produce a thematic report for strategic debate and policy formulation, with final recommendations to be submitted to the CoP at its 34th meeting in 2026.
• The Advisory Board supports the new design of the STeP fellowship program, specifically highlighting the need to monitor results from the bioeconomy cohort in Brazil to inform the design of future cohorts in other countries.
• The SDC is advised to broaden its engagement beyond traditional public institutions to include universities, NGOs, and private sector actors. Additionally, it is recommended to strengthen ties with global multilateral organizations, including the International Science Council (ISC), the UNFCCC, the CBD, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
• The SDC is establishing a digital Knowledge Center to serve as an accessible platform for sharing science diplomacy practices, events, and results, which will be coordinated with the IAI website to maximize institutional resources.
