This report details the activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate from June 1, 2024, to April 2025. It focuses on implementing decisions from the 32nd Conference of the Parties (CoP-32), expanding institutional partnerships, advancing transdisciplinary research on climate, health, and oceans, and strengthening science diplomacy through the IAI Science Diplomacy Center and the STeP Fellowship program.

• The IAI Directorate is implementing several transdisciplinary research initiatives, including the Collaborative Research Action (CRA) on Integrated Approaches to Human Migration/Mobility in an Era of Rapid Global Change and the Climate, Environment, and Health (CEH) Seed Grants. The CEH cohort included twelve funded projects, seven of which have already been completed.
• The IAI has expanded its network of Associates through new Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2) of the University of Chile on December 10, 2024, the Santa Catarina Research and Innovation Foundation (FAPESC) via a technical cooperation agreement on August 20, 2024, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) on December 16, 2024.
• The IAI is co-leading the FOREST CRA (Tropical Forests: Global Implications and Pressing Actions) with FAPESP, involving 22 funding agencies globally. The initiative opened for pre-proposal submissions in June 2024, receiving 80 pre-proposals, 49 of which were eligible for full proposals due by August 27, 2025.
• The IAI Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) is active in capacity building and high-level engagement, including the development of a Ministers’ Conversation Series and the training of government officials. A workshop on Drought Management is scheduled for May 26–27, 2025, in Asunción, Paraguay.
• The STeP (Science, Technology and Policy) Fellowship program has seen 81 fellows from 15 countries complete the program to date. The fifth cohort (2025–2026) will begin in August 2025, focusing on bioeconomy, climate services for drought management, and the climate-environment-health nexus.
• The IAI is advancing ocean-related research and policy, including the co-development of the 'SargMarine' project with the OAS and CAF to manage Sargassum in Colombia, Grenada, Jamaica, Panamá, RD, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Directorate is also preparing for the UN Ocean Conference in June 2025.
• The IAI has established an Indigenous People Advisory Committee (IPAC) following a call for nominations issued on February 5, 2025, which resulted in 14 nominations. The selection process for the committee was completed by mid-April 2025.
• A marketing assessment conducted in October 2024 with 16 IAI National Representatives revealed a high turnover rate, with 43% of focal points assuming their roles in the last two years. The assessment also found that 79% of focal points have limited time availability to dedicate to IAI work.
• The IAI is expanding its reach to potential new member states, having conducted outreach and meetings with stakeholders in El Salvador, Belize, and Barbados.
