Summary report of activities from 1 July 2023 to date by the IAI Directorate

This report details the activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate from 1 July 2023 to April 2024. It outlines progress in implementing decisions from the 31st meeting of the Conference of the Parties, focusing on research funding, science diplomacy, and multilateral partnerships across the Americas.

• The IAI Directorate developed a Collaborative Research Action (CRA) on Tropical Forests in partnership with FAPESP and the Belmont Forum. The CRA was approved in November 2023, with a call for proposals expected in June 2024. To support this, a training program was launched under the IAI’s Transdisciplinary Academy to build regional research capacity and proposal development.
• The IAI's Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) launched a Training Program for Policy Makers in the Americas, starting with an inaugural workshop in Panama in October 2023 attended by eleven IAI Parties. The SDC is also developing a virtual open-access curriculum on Science Diplomacy in Latin America and the Caribbean for the IAI's virtual campus.
• To address the nexus of climate, environment, and health, the IAI selected twelve research teams from 15 countries for seed grants. Additionally, the Directorate managed the Belmont Forum CEH2 grants, where 30 research consortia submitted full proposals in March 2024 following a review of over 50 pre-proposals.
• The IAI established a Committee on Oceans, Islands and Coastal Regions, which has met four times and continues to meet monthly. The Directorate is supporting scoping activities for the Belmont Forum's 'OceansII' CRA to ensure priorities from the Americas are represented in the global ocean scenarios for 2050.
• The IAI Directorate expanded its network of associates by signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the University of the West Indies on 4 March 2023 and the Centro de Investigación para el Cambio Global (CICAG) of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción in Paraguay on 1 November 2023.
• The IAI is enhancing its science-to-policy interface through the launch of Virtual Campus courses on 'Science Communication', 'El Niño and Health', and 'Transdisciplinary Research at the nexus of Climate, Environment, and Health'. It also published a brief on the 6th IPCC Report regarding water security in the American continent.
• The IAI Directorate is implementing equity and data policies by establishing a committee on gender and EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) and a committee to review the Open Data Policy and Principles. The EDI committee is currently developing guidelines to establish an Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Advisory Committee (IP&LC-AC).
