Report of the 2023 Extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties

This document is a report on the 2023 Extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held via videoconference on 18 April 2023. The primary purpose of the meeting was the election of a new Executive Director for the IAI.

• The Conference of the Parties elected Dr. Anna Stewart Ibarra as the new Executive Director of the IAI for a three-year term, with the possibility of a single additional term.
• The election followed a recruitment process overseen by a 10-member search committee, which included representatives from member countries, the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), the Science Advisory Committee (SAC), and IAI Directorate Staff.
• The search committee received 10 nominations from Parties by the 1 November 2022 deadline. The process involved initial virtual interviews with four shortlisted candidates on 13 and 14 February, followed by final interviews with two candidates on 11 and 13 April 2023.
• The search committee recommended Dr. Anna Stewart-Ibarra based on her 15 years of experience in academia and intergovernmental spaces, including her role as IAI Scientific Director since 2019, and her expertise in bridging the gap between science and policy.
• The 2023 Extraordinary meeting was attended by accredited Parties including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and the United States of America, with the Dominican Republic attending as a Party observer.
• According to the Agreement establishing the IAI, the Executive Director must be elected by a two-thirds majority of the Conference of the Parties and cannot be a citizen of Uruguay.
