Summary report of activities by the IAI Directorate during the 2022-2023 intersessional period

This report details the activities and achievements of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate during the 2022-2023 intersessional period. It outlines progress in science-policy interfaces, capacity building, and the implementation of the IAI Strategic Plan, focusing on climate change, health, and science diplomacy across the Americas.

• The IAI Directorate established a Gender and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee involving Parties, the Science Advisory Committee (SAC), the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), and the Belmont Forum. This committee developed an implementation plan that integrates EDI requirements into all grant requirements and provides EDI training for STeP fellows and grantees.
• The IAI implemented a training program on the nexus of climate, environment, and health, including the "Climate and Health Responder Course for Latin America" in partnership with PAHO and the Global Consortium on Climate & Health Education. This involved 25 transdisciplinary teams from 14 countries and an in-person workshop in San Martín de los Andes in March 2023 attended by nearly 100 experts from 20 countries.
• The IAI launched the Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) for the Americas in late 2022 to serve as a regional reference center for science diplomacy capacity building and governance. The SDC is supported by an advisory board of 11 professionals, including representatives from Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, and the USA.
• The Science and Technology Policy (STeP) Fellowships Program expanded from 17 fellows in 4 countries to 64 fellows across 13 countries. The program provides training in communication, leadership, and science diplomacy to early and mid-career scientists and policymakers.
• The IAI is collaborating with the Belmont Forum on several Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs), including 'Pathways to sustainability 1' (supporting investigators in Ecuador, Canada, Colombia, and Mexico) and 'Migration and Mobility' (funding projects in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile). A new CRA on 'Amazonia and Tropical Forests' is currently in the scoping phase.
• The IAI manages the Drought Information System for Southern South America (SISSA), funded by EUROCLIMA + and Spain’s Cooperation Agency (AECID). The system provides drought tools and information to six countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
• The IAI published its first compendium on the Impacts of Climate Change in Latin America and the Caribbean, which consists of 12 Op-Eds written by STeP fellows and investigators and published in major regional newspapers in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
