Update on partnership with the Belmont Forum and Collaborative Research Actions

This briefing from the IAI Directorate provides an update on the partnership between the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Belmont Forum, detailing the IAI's role as a member and co-Chair, and its participation in several Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs).

• The IAI has integrated deeply with the Belmont Forum, with the Belmont Forum Executive Council accepting a proposal in November 2017 to host the Belmont Forum Secretariat in Montevideo, Uruguay. The IAI became a member of the association following a unanimous vote in November 2018, and the IAI Executive Director served as co-Chair of the Belmont Forum during the 2022-2023 intersessional period.
• The IAI Directorate is currently involved in four specific Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs): 'Pathways to Sustainability', where it provided in-kind support for the Fish2Sustainability project involving investigators from Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico; 'Integrated Approaches to Human Migration/Mobility in an Era of Rapid Global Change', which funded three projects with investigators in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay; 'Climate, Environment and Health (CEH2)'; and 'Amazonia and Tropical Forests'.
• Regarding the 'Climate, Environment and Health (CEH2)' CRA, the IAI Directorate has issued a regional priorities report, partnered with the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education (GCCHE) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for virtual capacity-building, and hosted a training workshop in Neuquen, Argentina. Additionally, 12 transdisciplinary teams received seed grants, and the Directorate expects to support 5 projects from IAI member states in the Caribbean and Latin America.
• The IAI Directorate and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) are jointly leading a new CRA focused on 'Amazonia and Tropical Forests'. This action is in the scoping phase, with a call text expected in October 2023 and a launch in early 2024. Activities include a January 2023 workshop at George Mason University in the United States, planned scoping with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in June 2023, and planned scoping with the Sinchi Amazonic Institute of Scientific Research and the Humboldt Institute in Colombia in August 2023.
