La Evaluación Regional del IAI
Summary
This report presents preliminary results from the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Regional Assessment, which maps national and international global change policies and decision-making landscapes to better align research funding with the priority needs of member countries.
Key insights
- Climate Action is the most critical current policy priority for IAI Parties, with high agreement across all data sources. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services is also a high priority, though there is less consensus on its importance compared to Climate Action. Both of these priorities were rated more than twice as important as the third-highest priority, Water Security.
- Certain policy priorities vary by subregion: Water Security is a primary priority for countries in the Arid Andes (Chile, Bolivia, and Peru), while Clean Air, Water, and Soil is a priority for North American countries (United States and Canada).
- Emerging priorities differ between decision-makers and researchers. Focal points identify Human Health and Well-being as the most critical emerging priority, followed by Energy Security. In contrast, researchers identify Poverty and Equality as the most important emerging priority.
- The primary barriers to using scientific information in decision-making, agreed upon by both researchers and focal points, are a lack of intersectoral collaboration, a lack of scientific information tailored for non-technical audiences, and competing government priorities.
- Opportunities for integrating science into policy include international cooperation and funding, multilateral agreements, and cross-border dialogue spaces. Researchers specifically highlighted the growing body of national and international evidence as a key opportunity.
