Recruitment for the post of Executive Director

A briefing document outlining the proposed recruitment process and timeline for the next Executive Director of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), following the conclusion of the current Director's second term on 31 May 2023.

• The recruitment process for the IAI Executive Director is scheduled to begin with the establishment of a selection committee at the 30th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-30, 2022), chaired by the Chair of the IAI Executive Council.
• The proposed timeline for the recruitment includes drafting the post description 60 days after CoP-30, making it public on 1 October 2022, conducting evaluations and interviews in January 2023, and holding an extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties on 1 March 2023 to agree on a candidate.
• According to the Agreement, the Executive Director is elected by a two-thirds majority of the Conference of the Parties for a three-year term, with the possibility of a single additional term, and cannot be a citizen or permanent resident of the Party hosting the Directorate.
• The IAI Directorate highlights a lack of diversity in previous appointments, noting that all Executive Directors since the Agreement's inception have been male and none have been selected from the Caribbean, Central America, or the Andean region.
