Core budget and country contributions for FY 2021-2022 and preliminary request 2022-2024

This briefing from the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate presents the Core Budget and country contribution requests for the 2021-2022 fiscal year and preliminary requests for 2022-2024.

• The Core Budget request for the 2021-2022 fiscal year is USD 1,400,000, which is unchanged from the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The proposal specifically requests no increases to the Core Budget or staff salaries for this period.
• Preliminary budget requests for subsequent fiscal years show a planned increase in total funding: USD 1,500,000 for 2022-2023 and USD 1,600,000 for 2023-2024.
• The IAI Directorate reports that its operational capacity is under strain due to the non-submission or late submission of contributions by some Parties. While the Directorate is not increasing requested contribution levels for 2021-2022 due to COVID-19 economic challenges, it notes that most Party contributions have remained unchanged since the Agreement entered into force in 1992.
• The IAI Directorate's staffing includes three internationally recruited positions, two locally hired staff, and two staff members provided by the Technical Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU) per the host country agreement. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 25 September 2020 with the Republic of Korea Environment Corporation, International Cooperation Division, aims to increase the participation of South Korean universities, early career researchers, and interns.
• The IAI's information and communication technology services, including telephony, hardware, and the network, are centralized through a contracting firm located in Montevideo, Uruguay.
