Joint Report of the Science-Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC)

The Joint Report of the Science-Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) outlines the activities, membership updates, and strategic contributions of these two bodies to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) leading up to the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties in June 2021.

• The SAC and SPAC held nine joint teleconferences between September 1, 2020, and June 1, 2021, to improve communication and knowledge exchange. Discussions focused on revising the scientific agenda, funding opportunities, the COVID-19 working group, and the creation of working groups for strategic plan indicators and regional assessments.
• The committees contributed to the revision of the IAI Scientific Agenda to better incorporate transdisciplinary research and human systems, and they supported the editorial process for a CRN3 special issue in a peer-reviewed journal expected for publication in April or May 2021.
• A dedicated working group was established in May 2020 to identify how the IAI could support Parties during the COVID-19 pandemic. This resulted in the development of three 'SciTalks'—on-demand scientific presentations—in collaboration with Virtual Keystone Symposia (VKS), which were presented in public webinars.
• The SAC and SPAC provided feedback on a four-year proposal submitted to the NSF titled 'Building Capacity for Science-Informed Policy in the Americas through Regional Collaboration, Global Change Science Synthesis, Science Diplomacy, and Transdisciplinary Networks'.
