Elections of the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC)

This briefing document from the IAI Directorate outlines the status of the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) elections for the 27th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-27). It notes that elections cannot proceed until rules of procedure are adopted and recommends that current members continue their participation until elections can be held, potentially rescheduling them to the 28th meeting.

• The Conference of the Parties (CoP-26) previously directed the Executive Council, the Standing Committee for Rules and Procedures, and the IAI Directorate to create rules of procedure for the election of the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) for review at the 27th meeting.
• The IAI Directorate states that nominations and elections for the SPAC cannot take place until the Conference of the Parties adopts the rules of procedure, which may occur at CoP-27.
• The current SPAC membership consists of Dr. Brigitte Baptiste, Dr. Walter Baethgen, Dr. Gilberto Cámara, Dr. Javier Gracia-Garza, Dr. Maria Netto, Dr. Evelia Rivera-Arriaga, and Dr. James Rusak. Dr. Javier Gracia-Garza and Dr. James Rusak concluded their first terms in June 2018; while both are eligible for re-election, Dr. James Rusak intends to resign at the end of his term.
• The document proposes that the Conference of the Parties invite current SPAC members, including those whose terms have expired, to remain in the Committee until elections are held, and suggests rescheduling these elections to the twenty-eighth meeting.
