Decision XXVI/34: Memorandum of Understanding with the Organization of American States

The IAI Directorate has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Organization of American States (OAS) to strengthen scientific research and policy contributions regarding global change in the Americas. The partnership includes efforts to expand IAI membership by engaging non-Parties in Central America and the Caribbean, including targeted outreach to El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, and Ecuador.

• Following instructions from the 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-26) in Antigua, the IAI Directorate established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Organization of American States (OAS). The MoU is designed to create a framework for cooperation mechanisms, enhance scientific contributions to policy processes, and develop institutional and human capacities within the Americas.
• The OAS General Secretariat is assisting the IAI Directorate in encouraging non-Parties in the Caribbean and Central America to ratify the Agreement establishing the IAI. As part of this effort, the IAI presented its objectives on 19 March 2019 in Washington, D.C., at a Joint Session of the Permanent Council (PC) and the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI), which was attended by twenty-eight OAS Member States.
• During the Joint Session in Washington, D.C., the IAI held specific meetings with representatives from Honduras, Guyana, and El Salvador to discuss the benefits of ratifying the Agreement for their scientific communities and countries, as well as a briefing for the representative of Ecuador regarding the next IAI Conference of the Parties.
