Decision XXVI/12, Decision XXVI/13 and Decision XXVI/14: Rede Clima, American Association for the Advancement of Science and Future Earth

This briefing from the IAI Directorate updates the Conference of the Parties on the implementation of decisions to invite Rede Clima, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Future Earth as Associates of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). It also recommends a review of the mechanisms used to establish the IAI's regional network of cooperating entities.

• The IAI is currently in discussions with Rede Clima regarding its role as an Associate, including the potential creation of a Nitrogen Center of Excellence in partnership with the National Institute for Space Research. This follows findings from IAI network CRN3005 that the region lacks nitrogen-specific policies, common directives, or frameworks for national regulations.
• The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) became an Associate of the IAI following an invitation on 9 July 2018 and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Washington, D.C. on 14 September 2018, with a focus on capacity building workshops.
• Future Earth was invited to be an Associate on 9 July 2018, building on a 2017 Memorandum of Understanding and its status as a Future Earth Strategic Partner. Collaborative efforts include a side-event at UNFCCC COP-24 with the German Committee Future Earth to discuss the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1,5°C and the 2030 Agenda, focusing on regional and national risks to human well-being and ecosystems.
• The IAI Directorate identifies a need to strengthen its regional network of cooperating entities. While the IAI has five Associates, it has only established one Institute Research Center (AQUASEC at the University of Arizona and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and has never established an Affiliated Research Institution under Article X of the Agreement.
• The Conference of the Parties is invited to instruct the IAI Directorate, the Scientific Advisory Committee, and the Science-Policy Committee to review the implementation of Articles IX, X, and XI of the Agreement to recommend a process for increasing the number of Affiliated Research Institutions and Institute Research Centers.
