Revisions to the IAI Conflicts of Interest and Standards of Ethical Conduct

This briefing document, prepared by the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), and the IAI Directorate, proposes revisions to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Conflicts of Interest and Standards of Ethical Conduct. The primary update restricts members of the SAC and SPAC from submitting proposals to IAI calls in any capacity, a restriction that extends for six months after their service ends.

• The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) agreed that their members should not submit proposals to any IAI call as a Principal Investigator, co-Principal Investigator, consultant, or advisor. This restriction remains in effect for 6 months after a member's participation in the SAC concludes.
• The IAI defines a Conflict of Interest as a situation where an individual has "divided loyalties between the IAI and another entity," stemming from three primary sources: personal interest, outside affiliations, and favors.
• Specific disqualifying conflicts of interest for proposal reviewers include current employment or consideration of employment at an applicant institution, a known family relationship with a project investigator, or collaboration on a project within the last 36 months.
• IAI Directorate staff, including the Director, are strictly prohibited from acting as applicants or submitting proposals to any IAI call. Furthermore, IAI staff are disqualified from participating in programs for one year following the end of their service.
