Nominación de candidatos al Comité Asesor en Ciencia y Políticas

This briefing document, prepared by the Chair of the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) for the 26th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), outlines the process for nominating a candidate to fill a vacancy on the SPAC in June 2018.

• A vacancy on the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) will open in June 2018 following the end of the first term of Dr. Javier Gracia Garza. Parties may nominate new qualified candidates or propose the re-election of Dr. Garza for the vacancy to be filled during the 26th CoP meeting in Antigua, Guatemala.
• The SPAC is tasked with providing advice to the CoP and IAI Directorates regarding the design and application of science within policy formulation and decision-making processes.
• Candidates for the SPAC must possess international recognition for their scientific activity and contributions to science and policy in the Americas. The committee seeks a balance of gender, ethnicity, and geography. As of the document date, the SPAC membership by country of residence consists of one member each from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and the United States, and two members from Canada.
• The SPAC recommends that new members possess high standards of scientific excellence and serve in a personal capacity rather than as national representatives. Required expertise includes science-policy links in decision-making, effective communication of scientific information for policy relevance, experience with international commissions, and knowledge of global change, specifically climate change.
• For the 2018 nominations, the SPAC specifically recommends candidates capable of linking biodiversity, ecosystem service governance, and global change in the Americas. They should be able to promote evidence-based policy frameworks such as nature-based solutions or ecosystem-based adaptation, integrate multiple value systems regarding knowledge production, and use new communication approaches to connect science with policy development.
