Nominations to the Science-Policy Advisory Committee

This briefing document outlines the process for nominating a member to the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, following the conclusion of Dr. Javier Gracia Garza's first term in June 2018.

• The Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) was established by Decision XXI/13 at the 21st meeting of the Conference of the Parties in Montevideo in 2013 to provide advice to the CoP and IAI Directorates on the design and use of science for decision-making and policy.
• A vacancy for a SPAC member occurs in June 2018 as Dr. Javier Gracia Garza concludes his first term. Parties were invited to submit nominations for a new candidate or the re-election of Dr. Garza by 20 May 2018 for the 26th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties in Antigua, Guatemala.
• The SPAC seeks candidates with international recognition for their science and contributions to science and policy in the Americas, emphasizing expertise in science-based decision making, global change (specifically climate change), and the ability to communicate scientific information for policy. For 2018 nominations, the committee specifically recommends candidates capable of linking biodiversity and ecosystem services governance with global change, promoting nature-based solutions or ecosystem-based adaptation, and integrating multiple value systems in knowledge production.
