CONFERENCIA DE LAS PARTES DEL INSTITUTO INTERAMERICANO PARA LA INVESTIGACIÓN DEL CAMBIO GLOBAL

This briefing document, prepared by the United States of America as President of the Executive Council, outlines the process for electing members to the Executive Council of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) for the 2018-2020 term. It includes the formal recommendation for the 26th Conference of the Parties (CoP) to elect nine members and provides the full Rules of Procedure for the Executive Council.

• The Executive Council of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) consists of a maximum of nine members who are elected by the Conference of the Parties for two-year terms, with a requirement for geographically balanced representation.
• For the 2016-2018 term, the Conference of the Parties elected Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, the USA, Panama, and Paraguay to the Executive Council.
• The Executive Council is tasked with acting on behalf of the Conference of the Parties during the periods between its sessions.
• The Executive Council holds two ordinary meetings annually at the same location as the Conference of the Parties: one immediately before (pre-CoP) and one immediately after (post-CoP).
• The pre-CoP meeting of the Executive Council is specifically designated to address budgetary and financial matters, as well as any other pending issues, in preparation for the Conference of the Parties.
• The Executive Council's Bureau consists of a President, a First Vice-President, and a Second Vice-President, all elected for two-year terms, with the IAI Executive Director serving as the ex officio Secretary.
