Informe del Director Ejecutivo a la CoP sobre actividades de obtención de fondos

This report from the Executive Director of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) details fundraising activities conducted following Decision XXV/31. The efforts include consultations with private foundations, the development of a crowdfunding platform, the pursuit of US tax-exempt status, and strategic engagements with international development banks and the Belmont Forum to secure funding and cooperation for global change research.

• The IAI engaged with the Familia Del Rio Foundation in Redding, California, between August 16 and 19, 2017, to seek advice on fundraising and connections with IT sector donors and other foundations. This resulted in guidance for a long-term financing strategy, crowdfunding development, communication strategies for fundraising, and consultancy for engaging private sector donors.
• To expand its funding base, the IAI is implementing a crowdfunding platform via its website connected to a PayPal account. Additionally, the IAI hired J&M Philanthropy to assist in organizing meetings with potential donors and to process a 501(c)(3) tax exemption under the US Internal Revenue Code to facilitate contact with US donors, with a fundraising event planned for Seattle once the exemption is obtained.
• The IAI is pursuing strategic partnerships with international development banks. On September 15, 2017, meetings were held with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, D.C., resulting in an informal agreement to align IDB projects with IAI projects, specifically the 2018 Small Grants Program. The IAI also met with CAF (Development Bank of Latin America) to present its scientific agenda and the SGP-HW program, and was invited to propose improvements to the CEMA course website.
• The IAI's offer to host the Belmont Forum Secretariat was accepted on November 7, 2017, in São Paulo, Brazil. The IAI expects this role to increase its capacity to contact donors and funding agencies and create cooperation opportunities for IAI Parties. The two entities also collaborated on a meeting to create a flexible financing mechanism for global change scientific projects in the Americas.
• The IAI is actively seeking to contact donors in other regions, specifically mentioning Canada, the European Union, and Switzerland.
