Decision XXV/31: Reporting to CoP on fundraising activities by the Executive Director

The IAI Directorate has engaged in several fundraising initiatives, including consultations with the Del Rio Family Foundation and J&M Philanthropy to develop a long-term funding strategy and pursue 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in the United States. The IAI is implementing a crowdfunding mechanism via its website and PayPal, and has held strategic meetings with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and CAF—Development Bank of Latin America to align projects and secure funding. Additionally, the IAI was selected to host the Secretariat of the Belmont Forum, which is expected to enhance its ability to reach donors and funding agencies.

• The IAI sought advice from the Del Rio Family Foundation in August 2017 to improve its fundraising capabilities, specifically targeting the information technology sector and other foundations. This resulted in guidance on a long-term funding strategy, crowdfunding, communication strategies, and the use of consultancies for private sector outreach.
• To expand its donor base in the United States, the IAI contracted J&M Philanthropy to organize meetings with prospective donors and to help the Directorate secure 501(c)(3) tax-exemption status under the United States Internal Revenue Code. A fundraising event in Seattle is planned pending this tax-exempt status.
• The IAI is developing a digital fundraising capacity by contracting a web design consultant to create a website section for crowdfunding, which will be integrated with a PayPal account.
• The IAI has engaged with international development banks to synchronize efforts and secure support. This includes an informal agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) to harmonize projects, specifically the 2018 Small Grants Program, and discussions with CAF—Development Bank of Latin America regarding a proposal to enhance a MOOC on climate change in Latin America.
• The IAI was selected on 7 November 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, to host the Secretariat of the Belmont Forum. The IAI believes this role will improve its capacity to access funding agencies and donors and create collaborative initiatives for its Parties.
