Decision XXV/31: Reporting to CoP on fundraising activities by the Executive Director

The IAI Directorate reports on fundraising efforts including consultations with the Del Rio Family Foundation, the pursuit of 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in the US, and the development of a crowdfunding platform. Strategic engagements were held with the Inter-American Development Bank and CAF, and the IAI was selected to host the Belmont Forum Secretariat in Brazil to enhance its capacity to reach donors and funding agencies.

• The IAI Executive Director and the Director of Policy, Partnerships and Communication met with the Del Rio Family Foundation in Redding, California, from 16 to 19 August 2017. This engagement provided advice on communication strategies for fundraising, the development of a long-term funding strategy, crowdfunding, and the use of consultancies to engage private foundations, individual donors, and the private sector.
• The IAI is implementing new funding mechanisms and seeking legal status to attract donors. This includes contracting a web design consultant to create a crowdfunding section on its website linked to a Paypal account, and hiring J&M Philanthropy to organize meetings with donors in the information technology sector. Additionally, the IAI is seeking 501(c)(3) tax-exemption status under the United States Internal Revenue Code to facilitate outreach to United States donors and plan a fundraising event in Seattle.
• The IAI has engaged with international development banks to align projects and secure funding. In September 2017, the IAI met with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in Washington, D.C., resulting in an informal agreement to harmonize IADB projects with IAI projects, specifically the 2018 Small Grants Program. The IAI also met with the CAF—Development Bank of Latin America to discuss its scientific agenda, the Collaborative Research Networks (CRN), and the Small Grants Program on the Role of Ecosystem Services in Adaptation to Global Change for Human Well-Being (SGP-HW). The CAF previously provided financial support for the IAI's MOOC, 'Climate change in Latin America'.
• On 7 November 2017, in São Paulo, Brazil, the Belmont Forum Executive Council accepted a bid for the IAI Directorate to host the Secretariat of the Belmont Forum. The IAI intends for this to improve its ability to reach funding agencies and donors and create collaborative initiatives for its Parties. The IAI and Belmont Forum also collaborated on a meeting to discuss a flexible funding mechanism for scientific projects on global change in the Americas.
• Beyond the United States, the IAI is attempting to reach donors in Switzerland, the European Union, and Canada.
