Decision XXV/27: Participation in the Belmont Forum Americas Information Days

This briefing document, prepared by the IAI Directorate for the 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP), reports on a meeting held in São Paulo, Brazil, on 7 November 2017. The meeting focused on establishing a flexible collaborative funding mechanism to support scientific projects on global change in the Americas, aiming to reduce the IAI's dependency on a single donor and ensure long-term sustainability.

• The IAI and the Belmont Forum organized a meeting on 7 November 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, to discuss creating a flexible mechanism to facilitate the funding of scientific projects on global change in the Americas.
• The IAI Directorate is pursuing alternate funding sources to support its strategic agenda, including engaging the private sector and establishing an IAI Foundation Board to raise an endowment.
• There is a stated urgent need to secure alternate funding for IAI scientific projects because the current dependency on a single donor is considered a concern that must be remedied.
• Participants proposed several options for a collaborative funding mechanism, including an ad hoc group of funding agencies that meet periodically, a mechanism similar to the Belmont Forum, or a component within the IAI for members interested in funding projects in the Americas.
• Consensus was reached to use the IAI Small Grants Projects as a vehicle for possible co-funding and to establish an ad hoc group of interested agencies and donors to discuss support.
• The meeting recommended that the IAI Directorate invite Belmont Forum members to meet during the 26th IAI Conference of the Parties in Guatemala in 2018 to further discuss the funding mechanism.
