Decision XXV/28: Augmenting science communication capacities in IAI research projects

This briefing from the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Directorate reports on the implementation of Decision XXV/28, which aims to enhance the capacity of IAI research projects to communicate scientific results to stakeholders and policy makers.

• The IAI Directorate, in collaboration with Mexico, held a meeting for Third Round of the Collaborative Research Network (CRN3) Investigators from 29 November to 1 December 2017 in Cancun, Mexico, to discuss project outcomes and methods for augmenting the communication of research results to stakeholders and policy makers.
• Representatives from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) highlighted the difficulties in translating scientific results into usable information for policy makers and suggested collaboration areas, such as aligning IAI projects with national environmental frameworks and integrating IAI results into IPCC and IPBES processes.
• To improve science communication, the IAI is pursuing a special issue in a peer-reviewed policy/development journal for CRN3 project position papers and is editing brief summaries of research results for the IAI website and outreach to policy makers, following review by the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC).
• The IAI Directorate supported Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay in a submission to the 48th session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) in Bonn, Germany (30 April to 10 May 2018). Following the SBSTA's recognition of the value of regional science communication initiatives, the IAI is discussing the organization of a science communication workshop in the Americas with the UNFCCC Secretariat.
