Report of the IAI Directorate

The IAI Directorate presented a draft outreach brochure to the Conference of the Parties in June 2018. The brochure outlines the IAI's role as a regional intergovernmental organization supporting 19 Parties in the Americas. Since 2006, the IAI has invested 33 million USD in scientific projects and 5.3 million USD in scholarships for Latin American scientists, training 2,000 professionals. The IAI focuses on global change—including climate change, biodiversity loss, and land use change—and supports research on ecosystem services, fisheries, forest conservation, and the impacts of environmental crises on human health and urban/rural communities.

• The IAI is a regional intergovernmental organization supported by 19 Parties in the Americas that provides scientific information to civil society and policy makers to facilitate informed action and decisions. Its mission is to develop the capacity to understand the integrated impact of past, present, and future global change on regional environments in the Americas and promote collaborative actions.
• Since 2006, the IAI has invested 33 million US dollars in scientific projects and provided 5.3 million US dollars in scholarships for young scientists in Latin America. The organization has trained 2,000 young scientists and professionals and involved 477 scientists from 510 institutions in its research programs.
• The IAI defines global change as encompassing climate change and other environmental changes, including biodiversity loss, land use change, and the alteration of geochemical and water cycles, which affect economies and human well-being in the Americas.
• The IAI supports various global-change research projects and capacity-building initiatives. These include the study of biofuels, reforestation and forest conservation, the role of ecosystem services in land-use planning, ocean food chains and fisheries sustainability, emerging diseases and human health crises, and the impacts of flooding, drought, megacities, and rural communities.
