Informe de la Dirección Ejecutiva

The Executive Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) presented a long-term communication strategy and action plan to the 26th Conference of the Parties (CoP) on May 15, 2018. The strategy aims to increase the visibility of the IAI's scientific work, strengthen its role as a regional intergovernmental organization for policy-directed science, and attract new funding sources by better communicating its mission and impacts to Parties, partners, and the general public.

• The IAI's long-term communication strategy is designed to establish the institute as the "organización intergubernamental regional preeminente de ciencia dirigida a la política" and highlight its leadership in scientific communication to achieve sustainability in the Americas.
• The strategy identifies a direct link between improved communication and the IAI's long-term financing strategy, asserting that better promotion of activities will "maximizarán así el potencial de atraer a nuevos donantes y nuevas fuentes de financiamiento".
• The IAI currently lacks dedicated staff for communication; the Executive Directorate consists of 9 employees, including support staff, consultants in science, data, and translation, and one intern.
• The IAI has implemented several innovative communication tools, including a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Climate Change Impacts in Latin America, which has reached 9,000 registered participants since its launch at COP-22 in 2016.
• The institute is expanding its engagement with non-traditional partners, specifically targeting the private sector through corporate social responsibility and sustainable consumption, as well as indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC) to integrate traditional knowledge into scientific projects.
• Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay have recommended that the UNFCCC Secretariat evaluate effective ways to communicate science with a regional focus through organizations like the IAI, including the organization of a scientific communication workshop to support National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).
• The proposed five-year action plan includes requiring recipients of competitive grants to allocate a portion of their budgets and personnel to the creation of communication products as part of their projects.
