Report of the IAI Directorate Science-Policy

The IAI Directorate is working to bridge the gap between scientific research and policy-making in the Americas by establishing relationships with multilateral environmental agreements, enhancing the capacity of member countries, and diversifying its funding sources. Key efforts include collaborating with the IPCC and UNFCCC, developing a sub-regional network for megacities in Latin America, and implementing an open data policy. The Directorate is also seeking to increase the visibility of the IAI through communication strategies and the hosting of the Belmont Forum Secretariat.

• The IAI Directorate has established working relationships with global multilateral framework agreements to ensure that decisions reflect regional and national priorities and to help Parties meet national obligations, specifically regarding Nationally Determined Contributions, the United Nations Biodiversity Strategic Plan, and Sustainable Development Goals.
• To increase the contribution of scientists from Latin America to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), the IAI Directorate is discussing ways to engage early career researchers in expert reviews and communicate results generated by IAI project scientists.
• A sub-regional network involving Argentina, Brazil, Chile, ICLEI, and UNOSSC is being developed to address climate change, emissions, and air pollution specifically within megacities in Latin America.
• The IAI is expanding its membership and engagement, having held meetings with government representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, El Salvador, Grenada, Honduras, Saint Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, while seeking re-engagement with Jamaica and Cuba.
• The Directorate is implementing a strategy to increase visibility and data accessibility, which includes drafting a long-term communication policy, establishing an open data portal with support from Uruguay, and updating a MOOC on the Impacts of Climate Change in Latin America that has reached nearly 8,000 participants since November 2016.
• The IAI is diversifying its financial model by seeking private sector funding, tracking leveraged funding, and successfully proposing to host the Belmont Forum Secretariat in Montevideo starting in the summer of 2018.
